Hillside House System

All of the Hillside Scholars and staff were sorted into houses last week. The four houses are Sabio (House of Wisdom), Creativo (House of Creativity), Amable (House of Friendship), and Valeroso (House of Courage).

Each day, the students earn points for their house, and the points are announced each Monday. Students earned points in the library last week for keeping the book shelves neat, being polite, and using library manners. We have two houses tied for points this week. Sabio and Amable are tied for first place, each with 190 points.

Stay posted to see who is in first place next week.

First Week

This first week flew by! I cannot believe that I have met all of the Hillside scholars this week, and every one of them have checked out at least one book!! That is an awesome first week if you ask me.

Kindergarten was introduced to Mr. Wiggle's, the library bookworm. He gets very sad if books aren't taken care of properly. We learned to hug our books while we walk down the hallway and how to turn pages of the books so we don't tear them.

First grade was introduced to our library lion, who watches over the shelves and students while they are choosing their books.  The library lion learns how to be quiet in the library and never run! When the lion roars, he has to leave for a while, but thankfully he is allowed back in the library.

Second graders read about our library shelf elf, who watches over and takes care of the books. He was hidden really well, and we could not find him. The shelf elf teaches us how to take care of our books and not to eat or drink around our library books. We also learned to never leave our books outside or on the floor.

Third graders read The Library Dragon, which is about an elementary school where a real dragon comes to guard the books. This is one of my favorite books to read for beginning of school. Miss Lotta Scales is the library dragon, and she does not let the children touch the books. Third grade discussed library manners and how to treat our books like our friends -- you wouldn't wipe your nose on your friends.

This first week of school was so fun in the library! I am excited to relax and read this weekend, and then get back to the library Monday morning with new lessons, and new books. I can't wait to hear about what everyone read over the weekend.  I'm reading a Bluebonnet nominee, The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing by Sheila Turnage.

A New Beginning

Welcome to the Hillside Academy for Excellence Library Blog! I am so excited to be your librarian this year, and to start this new school year. I have some very exciting things planned for the students in the library this year.

On this blog I will share news, as well as book reviews for books in the library. I will be encouraging students to contribute to book reviews and book talks that will be displayed around the library throughout the year.

I look forward to meeting everyone at the Back to School Bash on Thursday, August 20th! You will have the opportunity to sign up to volunteer and find out how you can be a part of your child's success in the library.
